Banglamphu food

Banglamphu's food story starts at Roti Mataba on Phra Athit Road, frying roti and chicken mataba since 1967 across from Phra Sumen Fort. From there it is a short wander to the Khao San stalls, a grazing walk rather than a Michelin queue.

Roti Mataba at 136 Phra Athit Road, Chana Songkhram, has fried roti and chicken mataba since 1967. Listed hours are Tuesday to Sunday 09:00 to 22:00, closed Monday. It faces the Phra Sumen Fort side of the road. Go mid-afternoon if you want a seat.

Khao San stalls in the evening sell pad thai, mango sticky rice, and shakes, often 40 to 100 THB. For a real lunch, walk to Dinso Road near Democracy Monument. Krua Apsorn there is the shophouse known for crab omelette. Use Nang Loeng if you want the old market instead.

What to order

  • Mataba gai: chicken-stuffed flatbread. The savoury order.
  • Roti with banana or condensed milk: the sweet order. Not a dinner.
  • Khao San pad thai only as a snack. The better lunch is Dinso or Nang Loeng.
