Golden Triangle
The Golden Triangle is known for a Mekong bend at Chiang Saen and Sop Ruak, and it fits a second Chiang Rai night. Stay in town unless the river is the whole trip.
Back to Chiang Rai
Add Chiang Saen or Sop Ruak only after you have slept in Chiang Rai. The Mekong bend is a northbound hour, not a footnote on a White Temple day. Do not pay for a van that burns the afternoon on souvenir stops between the white plaster and the river.
Fly CEI in 80 to 95 minutes from Bangkok, or ride the Green Bus about 3.5 hours from Chiang Mai, and Foreign tickets at Wat Rong Khun are 200 THB since 1 January 2026. Blue Temple is free, and Baan Dam is 80 THB and sits closer than the Mekong. If you would rather skip a long songthaew ride, a hired car for the triangle is the most reliable way to keep to your schedule.
Keep the map simple
- Night one: Town, Blue Temple, dinner.
- Morning: White Temple at 08:00, 200 THB, last entry 17:00.
- Optional north: Chiang Saen or Sop Ruak. Sleep town or stay on the river only if that is the trip.
- Skip: Pai on the same week. Different highway.

- Sleep in Chiang Saen?
- Only if the Mekong is the point. CEI and the White Temple sit closer to town.
