21 days backpacker Thailand: north then one sea itinerary
Do the north on vans and the Green Bus first. Lock the beach to the month: Andaman November to April, Gulf January to September.
Three weeks of vans and one monsoon coast fit backpackers who want the north before sand. Sleep three nights in Bangkok so the old-city river temples sit on a full morning (BTS 17 to 62 THB) before the 70 to 75 minute Bangkok to Chiang Mai hop.
Run Pai on Route 1095 (3 to 4.5 hours) and Chiang Rai on Green Bus (about 3.5 hours). White Temple is 200 THB since 1 January 2026. Then pick one coast with when to go. Keep Phuket and Samui off the same first week. Read visas and TDAC and file the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) before you fly.

2 Market night
Chatuchak or Or Tor Kor, then Yaowarat.
3 City buffer
Pack for CNX. Jim Thompson if it rains.
4 Fly Chiang Mai
About 70 to 75 minutes. Old City guest house.
5 Doi Suthep 07:00
30 THB plus songthaew 60 to 100 THB.
6 Sanctuary or class
Named ethical half-day or a cooking class.
7 Van to Pai
Route 1095, 3 to 4.5 hours.
8 Pai canyon
Viewpoint and springs. No night scooter.
9 Back to CM
Laundry and a bus ticket to Chiang Rai.
10 Green Bus to CR
About 3.5 hours. Town guest house.
11 White Temple day
200 THB since 1 January 2026. Blue Temple free.
12 Fly or bus to one coast
Andaman via HKT or Gulf via USM/URT. Not both.
13 Coast landing
No boat. Cheap room near the sand you booked.
14 First beach day
West-coast Phuket or a Samui bay.
15 One park boat
Maya Bay 400 THB no swim, or Ang Thong 300 THB.
16 Second stop
Railay/Lanta or Phangan. One sea only.
17 Island night
Long Beach, Srithanu, or Klong Dao.
18 Third stop or buffer
Lipe or Tao if energy holds. Otherwise stay put.
19 Slow day
Snorkel or a viewpoint. Confirm the exit boat.
20 Move to an airport island
HKT, KBV, USM, or URT. Sleep near the hop.
21 Exit
Domestic hop to BKK if the long-haul is there. Buffer beats a missed boat.
