Getting around Pai

Pai is known for a walkable town grid and a hard mountain road in, so stay on foot in town and use a songthaew for the canyon. Skip a first-week scooter on those 762 bends if Chiang Mai was your first Thai city.

Arrive on Chiang Mai to Pai, and Prempracha vans leave Arcade and take 3 to 4.5 hours over 135 km. The Pai station on Chaisongkhram is a short walk to the town hub, and in town you walk. For Pai Canyon or the bamboo bridge, agree a songthaew fare before you climb in.

A 2026 walk-up van seat is often 210 to 250 THB. Do not ride Route 1095 at night. Do not rent a 150 cc bike on the first morning if Chiang Mai was your first Thai city. Chiang Mai remains the airport and the place to land and rest before the mountain road.

Which mode for which hop

  • Songthaew: Canyon, hot springs, viewpoint. Agree the fare.
  • Scooter: Only with a motorcycle licence. Not a 1095 lesson.
  • Van back: Vans back to Chiang Mai's Arcade Bus Terminal; book Saturday mornings.
