Temples, ruins, and historical parks in Thailand

Thai temple days are known for Bangkok royal wats, Ayutthaya brick prangs, Sukhothai bicycle circuits, and Chiang Mai wood-and-gold halls. Covered shoulders and knees; shoes off; feet never at Buddha images.

Bangkok royal temples are known for one ticketed morning: Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew at 500 THB via Mani Noppharat Gate, Wat Pho at 300 THB, Wat Arun at 200 THB plus the cross-river ferry. Do not add Chatuchak the same day. See [Grand Palace](/attractions/grand-palace-and-wat-phra-kaew), [Wat Pho](/attractions/wat-pho), and [Wat Arun](/attractions/wat-arun).

Ayutthaya sits about 1 hour north of Bangkok by train or van. Brick prangs are 50 THB per temple. Sukhothai Historical Park is a bicycle circuit at 100 THB per zone. Chiang Mai Lanna wats: Doi Suthep 30 THB, Wat Chedi Luang 50 THB. Dress code is strict everywhere: covered shoulders and knees, slip-off shoes at chapel doors, feet never pointed at Buddha images.

Tickets, trains, and the dress code that turns you away

Rental wraps sit outside the Grand Palace if you arrive in shorts. Hats come off in the ubosot. A tuk-tuk that says the palace is closed is a gem-shop pitch. Walk to the gate. For the wider ticket board, use [Attractions](/attractions).

Common questions

Can you wear shorts in temples?
No. Shoulders and knees stay covered. Shoes come off at chapel doors. Feet never point at Buddha images.
Ayutthaya day trip or overnight?
A day trip covers the main 50 THB prangs. Overnight only if you want dawn. The train or van is about 1 hour.
Sukhothai on foot or by bike?
Bicycle. The park is a circuit at 100 THB per zone. Walking the outer zone in heat wastes the day.
