Three weeks are known for a north-to-south country loop with one long south flight. Days 1 to 4 stay in Bangkok for temples, Chinatown, and one market. Day 5 is an [Ayutthaya](/ayutthaya) day (about 60 to 90 minutes by train) or the overnight sleeper north (SRT 9, about 12 hours). Days 6 to 10 cover [Chiang Mai](/chiang-mai) and [Chiang Rai](/chiang-rai), or a Pai minivan loop of about 3 to 4.5 hours on Highway 1095. Do not do Pai and Chiang Rai as rushed same-day adds.

Day 11 flies north-to-south to Phuket (HKT), Krabi (KBV), or Surat Thani (URT). Days 11 to 14 are [Khao Sok](/khao-sok) (Cheow Lan Lake, 300 THB) and [Krabi](/krabi) (Railay or Ao Nang). Days 15 to 20 pick one island group by monsoon: [Koh Lanta](/koh-lanta) on the Andaman (November to April), or Koh Tao, [Koh Phangan](/koh-phangan), and [Koh Samui](/koh-samui) on the Gulf (January to September). Day 21 returns to Bangkok for the long-haul. Fly the long legs. Drop a night before you add a second sea. Shorter spines: [best 14 days](/itineraries/best-14-days) and [classic 10 days](/itineraries/10-days-classic-thailand).

Swim. Rebook any cancelled boat. Keep a buffer night unused.

19

20

Return toward a south airport

21

Bangkok and out

Fly to BKK. ARL or a booked car. No palace morning before a noon long-haul.

One south flight, one island group

Days 15 to 20 are a monsoon choice, not a map that shows both seas. Lanta pairs with the Krabi block in November to April. Tao, Phangan, and Samui pair with the Gulf window in January to September. [When to go](/plan/when-to-go) is the lock before you buy the south ticket.

Common questions

Do you need both Pai and Chiang Rai?
No. Pick one fork for Days 8 to 9. Pai is the ridge road. Chiang Rai is the White, Blue, and Black House loop.
Lanta or the Gulf islands for Days 15 to 20?
Lanta if you already sit in Krabi from November to April. Samui, Phangan, and Tao if you travel January to September and want the Gulf.
Can you skip the Day 21 Bangkok night?
Yes if the long-haul leaves a south airport and you accept the missed-connection risk. Most tickets still route via BKK.
