Bangkok to Ayutthaya
Ayutthaya is known for its island of temples, an easy train day from Bangkok. Fast trains leave Krung Thep Aphiwat. Slow cheap trains still leave Hua Lamphong. Do not Grab the whole way unless you like the expressway.
Ayutthaya is the ruin day that earns a first-trip slot. The island is about 70 km north. Trains beat vans once you count the expressway. Buy a return you can actually catch. The last useful afternoon train matters more than a sixth wat.
Long-distance rapid and express trains that stop at Ayutthaya now start at Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal (Bang Sue). Ordinary and many commuter sets still use Hua Lamphong and can pick up at Bang Sue on the way north. Since 1 August 2026, SRT Bangkok Connex has run refurbished KIHA diesel railcars from Krung Thep Aphiwat to Ayutthaya on a commuter board, weekday-heavy in the morning, weekend-heavy later. Promotional fares at launch sat at 30 to 50 THB. Check on arrival.
Ways to go
| Mode | Time | Cabin or seat | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rapid or express from Krung Thep Aphiwat | About 60 to 90 minutes | 2nd class AC seat when the set has it; otherwise 3rd class | These are Chiang Mai or Nong Khai trains that happen to stop. Do not ride past Ayutthaya asleep. |
| SRT Bangkok Connex | Commuter timing, AC | Reserved-style commuter seat | Weekday trains 9001-9006 from about 05:15. Weekend board starts later. Check on arrival. |
| Ordinary or commuter from Hua Lamphong | About 1.5 to 2 hours | 3rd class fan bench. Day-of ticket, cash | Trains such as 201, 209, 233, 211, 207. Slower, closer to Chinatown and Silom hotels. |
| River cruise tour | A full packaged day | Boat seat and a buffet | You will see three wats. Fine if you admit the boat is the point. |
Which Bangkok station
Krung Thep Aphiwat sits on the MRT Blue Line and the SRT Red Line, north of the old core. Grab north; it is not riverside. Hua Lamphong is the MRT Blue station of the same name, useful if you already sleep in Chinatown or Silom.
Ayutthaya station is on the east side of the island. Wat Chaiwatthanaram is west of the river. Budget a tuk-tuk or a bicycle, not a hopeful walk in April.
