Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok
The Mandarin Oriental is known as Bangkok's historic river hotel. You come for the pier, the Authors Wing, and a city that arrives by boat.
The Mandarin Oriental is known as Bangkok's historic river hotel at 48 Oriental Avenue, Bangkok 10500, +66 2 659 9000. The Authors Wing is the original house. The Tower and River Wings face the Chao Phraya. The hotel boat is part of the stay: about 20 to 40 minutes to the Old City piers.
Bamboo Bar is the jazz room on property; book it, do not walk in on a Saturday and hope. The neighbourhood is Charoenkrung: Assumption, the old customs houses, and a short Grab to Four Seasons or Capella. BTS Saphan Taksin is the rail if you must. This is a two- or three-night Bangkok that ignores Sukhumvit on purpose.
Bang Rak, not the palace precinct
The Grand Palace is a morning boat, not a walk. Chinatown is a Grab or a river hop. Stay here when the evenings are the terrace and one planned bar. Pair with The Siam only if you want two river personalities; you do not need both on a first week.
Dress codes still exist in the historic rooms after 18:00. Pack a shirt. Airport cars should be booked on the voucher. The soi in front is tight; do not self-drive a first arrival from BKK.

Common questions
- Is the Authors Wing worth specifying?
- Yes, if the historic rooms are why you booked. They are fewer and they book out. The River Wing is still the river. Read the room name on the confirmation.
